Investigative Journalist Leslie Kean on the Billy Meier UFO case (December 2006)

Leslie Kean

What follows below is an email correspondence between James Deardorff and Leslie Kean, in which Ms. Kean has expressed her views on the Meier case in general.

James Deardorff to Leslie Kean: December 4, 2006

Dear Leslie,

Larry Driscoll sent me a copy of your latest email (UFOProphet note: Leslie Kean's responses to Larry Driscoll are in blue) with him, I hope that's OK. He sent it to me because he knows I've been investigating the Meier case since 1980 and have come to the same conclusions that all the other primary investigators have (Wendelle Stevens, Lee & Brit Elders, Gary Kinder, Michael Hesemann, Michael Horn): no way could it possibly be a hoax. I've long since exposed Kal Korff's stuff (and book) to be totally false or misleading and replete with distortions and omissions of much relevant evidence.

I'm a PhD with plenty of honors in my professional field of science before retiring, and so feel that my voice ought to be given at least as much attention as that of Richard Hall, Budd Hopkins, Stanton Friedman,or Mark Rodigher, who haven't looked seriously into the primary investigators' findings or researched the case for themselves.

I know I can't change your opinions on the case any more than we can change the opinions of congressmen who have long been brainwashed into thinking that UFOs can't be real. But I can't just let your statements to Larry go unchallenged and uncorrected. So let me try to set the record straight below:

Larry,

Thanks for taking the time to send me the materials. I admire your energy and diligent work, and I think your energy, applied to actual scientifically-based UFO research, would be helpful to all those doing UFO work. They need more people willing to work as hard as you seem to have been doing.

However, the Meier case has long been regarded by the majority of researchers who know anything about it as a fraud. I am aware that out of the serious UFO researchers there still remain a few who take Meier seriously, but long ago, the evidence for his deliberate hoaxing led virtually the entire UFO research community to reject him and his faked evidence.

"Deliberate hoaxing" is just horribly incorrect (please excuse my lack of tact or diplomacy, it can't be helped here). As a contactee Meier stands out so strongly in the amount and quality of positive evidence he was allowed to accumulate that the "mainstream" UFO investigators could not tolerate it. And so they ignored all the supportive evidence and listened just to those who don't think that aliens/ETs could be smarter than we are and have a strategy of dealing with us.

His recent split with his wife, and her testimony as to how she helped him create his frauds, were the final nails in the coffin.

That happened only after she decided she wanted out -- wanted a divorce so that she wouldn't be left alone so often at night with Billy Meier out enjoying conversations with Semjase. She had come under the influence of Swiss ufologist Luc Buergin who is of a mind like Korff. Meier freely stated from the first that he had had a model UFO made so that he could photograph it and see if his photos of it would look like the real thing; they didn't, so he tossed them. Why should he be faulted for that?

You may not be aware that years earlier, in 1979, she was interviewed on video tape, and then her children also, as to the "beamship" sightings she had had in connection with Meier's contacts, and with Meier's sudden disaapearance at the start of one contact. It's on tape, Leslie, I have the tape. One of the adult witnesses with her gave his written report of it also (in Stevens' 1982 book and in my website. The sound quality of the tape was poor, and so Lee & Brit Elders didn't utilize it in their extensive series of videos on the case. If you were to get interested, you could look here for a summary: www.tjresearch.info/witnessa.htm.

Or read the testimony of the earliest known witness, Phobal Cheng, at:
www.tjresearch.info/Phobal_plain_text.htm

Or look over the list of credible witnesses to his contact-related events, who have given their names:
www.tjresearch.info/witness-list.htm

Have you ever read Kal Korf’s book exposing his various hoaxes and fraudulent photos?

His book on the case has been thoroughly refuted, just as has his book on Roswell. Again, if you were to have the time, you could learn of this at:
www.tjresearch.info/moretree.htm
www.tjresearch.info/bachtel.htm
www.tjresearch.info/hasenbol.htm
www.tjresearch.info/Wedcake.htm
www.tjresearch.info/Ober-Sad.htm

In his book, Korff also paints a totally false picture about the Talmud of Jmmanuel document. Distortion after distortion, lie after lie:
www.tjresearch.info/refutekk.htm

I have not put a lot of time in studying this myself, because I rely on a number of trusted advisors who have ben working for decades on doing the best UFO research around. I trust their research and their conclusions; I don't have time to look into every UFO case. Some excellent researchers are Richard Hall, Budd Hopkins, Stanton Friedman, and Mark Rodigher from CUFOS. Bruce Maccabee does photo analysis.

I also give a lot of weight to Maccabee's analyses. He once wrote an article about the incident on 8mm movie tape in which Semjase maneuvered the ship back and forth over a treetop, and calculated the length of a string that would account for it if it were a model suspended from a pole (12 to 14 ft or so). In his website article on it, his conclusion was that the viewer should draw their own conclusion. But in it, he made a valuable additional calculation -- if it were a model swinging from a pole above a baby tree or model tree, the tree would have been only 2 1/2 to 3 ft tall, and would have been some 50 ft away from the camera! Try handling a pole over 50 ft long with suspended model some time, or even 25 ft! This is written up in:
www.tjresearch.info/BillyYes.htm (scroll down), with a link to Maccabee's website article.

One of the things I've learned from the high level Washington people I've worked with in CFi is that the language you use, and the choice of material sent, to anyone in power, such as the Congress, is absolutely crucial. As I said in Roll Call, we cannot tell these people that we have any answers, but can only say we have a mystery on out hands that needs to be looked into. Material like Billy Meier is the wrong kind of stuff to send these people for two reasons - one, that it doesn't leave the UFO question open but presents all kinds of claims of conversation with women ETs, "PleiadianPlejaren Extraterrestrials Contact" and trips throught time, etc (stuff that no skeptic could ever accept even if it were true), and two, that it is at best extremely controversal because many excellent investigators have shown it to be a fraud.

I certainly realize this, Leslie. But some of us do have to put truth ahead of political objectives. In so doing, we've sacrificed our "UFO" reputations but at least have clear consciences!

Thanks for reading this

Leslie Kean to James Deardorff: December 8, 2006

Jim,

I've been away and I'm just catching up; I'm very rushed because I leave town again tomorrow for a week. I remember speaking to you when I did my piece on criop circles; I quoted you in the story that first appeared in the Providence Journal.

Thanks for all the info. I simply don't have time to follow up on all this. The bottom line is that I know that this case is not one that I can work with in my work in Washington with CFi. Too many people who I trust don't agree with your assessment of it. I can only work with cases that don't have this kind of controversy. I continue to trust my close advisors who have served me well for many years.

Approaching people in DC is not about "truth" or feeling good about your "clear conscience." It's about finding a strategy that works, so you can open the door a crack and get them to take the subject seriously. I don't know if you understand how difficult this is to accomplish. But a case like Meier will never work, and if you continue to send this stuff around, it will only have a negative affect, and they will take one look and not bother to read it.

Thanks a lot for your input, but that's how I have to leave it right now.

I wish you all the best.

James W. Deardorff's UFO/Aliens-related papers published in peer-reviewed science journals

James W. Deardorff
Bio:

James Deardorff was a Research Professor Emeritus at Oregon State University, he held two BSC degrees in physics and meteorology, an MSc degree and PhD also in meteorology. He worked as a senior scientist and then as a research professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. His website TJResearch.info is dedicated to his studies and research into the origin of Christianity and his interest in the Talmud of Jmmanuel - a book Meier published translated from scrolls recounting the true teachings of Jmmanuel (aka Jesus). The website presents the results of 20 years analysis of the Talmud of Jmmanuel (TJ), showing, largely throughout a comparison with the Gospel of Matthew, that the TJ was the original source for that gospel. Title: Possible extraterrestrial strategy for earth
Journal: Royal Astronomical Society, Quarterly Journal (ISSN 0035-8738), vol. 27, March 1986, p. 94-101

Summary:
The arguments are reviewed which hold that our Galaxy is nearly saturated with extraterrestrial life forms, that our existence requires in hindsight that they were and are benevolent toward us, and that our lack of detection of them or communications from them implies that an embargo is established against us to prevent any premature knowledge of them. An inconsistency is detected, in that any sudden lifting of the embargo in a manner obvious to the public would cause societal chaos and possibly touch off a nuclear exchange, while any communications received via radio telescope would likely be either quickly confiscated by government agencies and not revealed to the public, or heavily censored. The inconsistency is that the advanced civilization should be expected to have planned some other strategy, if it is actually benevolent, experienced and intelligent. It follows that any embargo not involving alien force must be a leaky one designed to allow a gradual disclosure of the alien message and its gradual acceptance on the part of the general public over a very long time scale. A possible strategy for their accomplishing this is proposed.

Title: Extraterrestrial communications
Journal: Journal of Communication, v37, n3,  p. 181-184, Summer 1987

Description 1: by James Deardorff
So far, the search for alien intelligence, in its concentration upon a radio message from the stars, has neglected to search right here on Earth and examine the UFO phenomenon. The prevailing scientific rationale responsible for this breakdown in logic fails to take into account the embargo hypothesis and Clarke's third law, which holds that the actions of advanced extraterrestrials would likely seem to us to defy the laws of physics.

Description 2: by ERIC

Discusses the embargo hypothesis--the theory that Earth is apparently free from alien exploitation because of a presumed cosmic quarantine against this planet--which implies that, instead of being only a few hundred years technologically in advance of earthly civilization, extraterrestrials in charge are likely tens of thousands of years in advance.

Title: Examination of the embargo hypothesis as an explanation for the Great Silence
Journal: Journal of British Interplanetary Society, Journal (Interstellar Studies) (ISSN 0007-084X), vol. 40, p. 373-379, Aug. 1987

Abstract:
The embargo or quarantine hypothesis for explaining the 'Great Silence' is reviewed and found to be more plausible than the view that, at most, earth might expect to receive radio messages from some distant star. The latter hypothesis is shown to be compatible with extraterrestrial technologies only a few hundred years in advance of those on earth, whereas the embargo hypothesis more reasonably infers that they should be tens of thousands of years in advance and in control of any contact with humanity. Reasons why the embargo hypothesis has received insufficient attention are presented; they involve failure to allow for the application of both greatly advanced technology and high ethical values by maturing societies of extraterrestrial intelligence. The implication of the embargo hypothesis for space development is that planets already harboring diverse biota are ethically off-limits for exploitive colonization.

TitleInflation-Theory Implications for Extraterrestrial Visitation
Journal: Journal of British Interplanetary Society, Vol. 58, pp. 43-50, Jan/Feb 2005

Abstract:
It has recently been argued that anthropic reasoning applied to inflation theory reinforces the prediction that we should find ourselves part of a large, galaxy-sized civilisation, thus strengthening Fermi’s paradox concerning “Where are they?” Furthermore, superstring and M-brane theory allow for the possibility of parallel universes, some of which in principle could be habitable. In addition, discussion of such exotic transport concepts as “traversable wormholes” now appears in the rigorous physics literature. As a result, the “We are alone” solution to Fermi’s paradox, based on the constraints of earlier 20th century viewpoints, appears today to be inconsistent with new developments in our best current physics and astrophysics theories. Therefore we reexamine and reevaluate the present assumption that extraterrestrials or their probes are not in the vicinity of Earth, and argue instead that some evidence of their presence might be found in certain high-quality UFO reports. This study follows up on previous arguments that (1) interstellar travel for advanced civilizations is not a priori ruled out by physical principles and therefore may be practicable, and (2) such advanced civilisations may value the search for knowledge from uncontaminated species more than direct, interspecies communication, thereby accounting for apparent covertness regarding their presence.

Deardorff also published a theological paper.

Title: A Scientist turned New Testament scholar examines basic problems with Christianity's Origins: Resurrection vs. Reincarnation
Journal: Theological Discussion Series (Lutheran Church), March 2000

Abstract:
Christianity's origins are beset with very serious problems that remain unknown to most of its followers. What does a seeker of truth find upon examining these matters? Options are supplied on how the keeper of the faith may deal with the "unthinkable".

BMUFOR - Billy Meier's Outer Space Pictures: Asket, Nera and Semjase

Photo #109, allegedly showing from left to right – Asket, Nera and Semjase (partly visible)
Photo #110 (image enhanced), allegedly showing Asket and a women on her left, not identified by Meier
Photo #111, allegedly showing, from left to right – Asket, Nera and Semjase (partly visible)

During Meier’s Great Journey in space described in Contact Report 31, which took place from July 17-22, 1975*, he allegedly traveled through the Universal Barrier (or Tunnel) to a parallel or twin Universe called the DAL Universe in a Plejaren mother ship called the Great Spacer. Once in the DAL-universe, together with Semjase he transfers to the giant space ship of the people of one of Meier’s former contact persons from the DAL-universe, the extraterrestrial woman Asket. There, according to the excerpts from CR 31, Meier was allowed to take some photographs of the extraterrestrial women Asket, Nera and Semjase.

It is not clear on how many photographs Meier actually shot of Asket, Nera and Semjase, but he published only three photographs which are indexed as #109, #110 and #111 in his photo catalogue book – ‘Verzeichnis – der Nummern und Legenden der FIGU-Photos (1991/1999)‘. These photos became some of the most well known and controversial photos of the Meier case.

The above pictures #109, #110 and #111 of Asket, Nera and Semjase have been sold to the public by Meier/FIGU probably from around 1975 onwards. They have also been promoted and published numerous times in various newspapers, magazines, TV shows, etc. since 1976.

Did Meier really photograph the three ET women?

BMUFOR - Billy Meier's Outer Space Pictures: Alien spaceship in TARO system

During Meier’s Great Journey through the Universe described in Contact Reports 31, 32, 34 and 35, he allegedly traveled to many different galaxies, stars and planets. A system he also visited is the TARO system in the galaxy MARA, 15,000 million light years from Earth. During this visit together with Semjase he saw an alien spaceship which Semjase tried to contact.

Along with this passage two pictures are published of which it is not entirely clear what they are supposed to represent, whether they are of an alien spaceship as is discussed on the same page of the contact report or two totally different objects. These pictures are supposedly part of the collection of 42 space photos – of which around 2001 it ‘was strictly ensured, with the help of Ptaah, that it only concerned “Billy’s” genuine pictures or his pictures that were only slightly falsified’.

Is Meier's picture of an Alien spaceship in TARO system genuine ?

BMUFOR - Billy Meier's Outer Space Pictures: Universal Barrier or Tunnel

During Meier’s Great Journey in space described in Contact Report 31, which took place from July 17-22, 1975, he allegedly traveled to a parallel or twin Universe called the DAL Universe in a Plejaren mothership called the Great Spacer. In order to transfer from our DERN Universe to the twin DAL Universe, a tunnel-like portal or gateway called a Universal Barrier was artificially generated. His return journey from the DAL Universe through the Universal Barrier is described in Contact Report 32. Before traveling through the Universal Barrier to the DAL Universe Meier took a picture of it.

Though both the Contact Reports 66 and 68 contradict each other on how the artist has come to drew a painting that is similar to Meier's picture, Semjase and Meier in both the contact reports however make the same argument that Meier's photograph existed several months before the artist painted a Universal Barrier look-alike picture. Semjase argues that since Meier's pictures already existed for several months before these drawings were made later for the first time by illustrators, the irrationality of the Earth people will make them accuse Meier of swindle as the Earth people do not know how to think, act and rationally acknowledge the real facts. Moreover Semjase also points out some "stark differences" between both of the images.
  1. Was Meier's picture of Universal Barrier published several months before the artist published his painting of space colony?
  2. Are there "stark differences" between the Universal Barrier and the space colony painting?

ANNOUNCEMENT: James W. Deardorff passed away on Dec 28, 2014

Date of birth August 28 1928
Date of death December 28 2014

James W. Deardorff (Jim) died on 12/28/14 of lung cancer at the age of 86, despite never having smoked.

Jim was born on 8/28/28, the middle of three children to Ralph and Mary Deardorff in Seattle. He was raised in Portland and graduated from Lincoln High School. He spent his freshman year at Reed College then transferred to Stanford to participate in an NROTC scholarship. He spent his fourth year at UCLA studying all the prerequisites for graduate meteorology. After serving 3 years in the Navy he studied graduate meteorology courses at University of Washington, where he received his PhD in 1959. After working on an air-sea interaction project at U of W, he obtained a job at the newly established National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO in 1962.

It was at UCLA where he first became involved with folk dancing, and at a dance at the U of W he met his wife, Leona. They were soon married and raised 3 daughters. Over the next 54 years they enjoyed folk dancing and hiking. Leona preceded him in death in 2010.

Jim spent a rewarding 16 years at NCAR as a senior scientist specializing in thermal convection, turbulence and diffusion within the planetary boundary layer. In 1978 he left NCAR with his family for the Dept. of Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, where he was a research professor until taking early retirement in 1986. This freed up his time to pursue frontier topics such as the UFO phenomenon, which led to his further interest in biblical and reincarnation studies. He published numerous papers and books related to his research of these subjects. His work in these fields can be viewed at his principal website: www.tjresearch.info.

His brother Don, sister Valerie, three daughters Ellen, Laila, Dana, grandchildren Michael and Kristine, survive him.

Per his wishes there will be no memorial service.

As a part of this project, we are very glad to inform you that our first donor was none other than the Research Professor Emeritus(Oregon State University) James Deardorff who sent us 2 boxes full of material which we received on January 23, 2014. Visit our ARCHIVES page for Mr. Deardorff's priceless collection.
James Deardorff

Deardorff sent us his material in 2 boxes through USPS with all the packing & shipping costs(total of $150) paid by him!

Material arranged according to the different categories like books, videos, booklets,..etc.

My mom took this photo as I was going through categorizing all the material. I could not resist reading some material while categorizing and so this whole process which started with picking up the boxes at the local post office at 1:30 pm on Jan 23, finished at 4 am the next morning.
